Deckenia nobilis is an original on the Seychelles -based palm which alone the genus Deckenia forms.
features
Blanketia is a single-stemmed, monocial palm. The trunk can reach a height of 30 and more meters, whereby the diameter does not exceed 45 cm. The trunk is extremely straight, mostly light gray, with the rings of the leaf scars being darker. The crown shaft is cylindrical, slightly wider at the bottom, and mostly light green, rarely blue-green to purple. Young palms are densely covered with 5 to 7.5 cm long thorns on the trunk, the crown shaft and the leaf stalks . These gradually disappear with age, so the trees are unreinforced when they reach a height of around 3.6 meters.
The crown is large and round. The leaves are 3 to 3.6 m long and pinnate. The leaflets are one to 1.3 m long, linear-lanceolate, dark green and limp to semi-drooping. The rhachis leaf is usually twisted in the middle so that the apical half of the leaf is in a vertical plane.
The spathe of the inflorescences is prickly, regardless of the age of the flowering tree. The inflorescences arise from buds below the crown shaft. They are a bouquet of yellow branches with both male and female flowers. The fruits are small, egg-shaped and black.
Distribution and locations
Coveria is endemic to the Seychelles . It grows in the rainforest on hills, slopes and low mountains, mostly within sight of the coast, but also up to 2000 m above sea level. In some areas it forms dense colonies that prevent the growth of any vegetation below them, including that of their own seedlings, due to the falling leaves. The species is endangered by habitat loss and the foraging of palm hearts .
Systematics
Blanketia nobilis is the only species in the genus Deckia . It is placed within the palm family in the subfamily Arecoideae, Tribe Areceae, Subtribus Oncospermatinae.
The generic name honors the German Africa explorer Karl Klaus von der Betten (1833–1865); the specific epithet means noble and refers to the size and appearance of the species.
use
Blanketia is grown as an ornamental plant in tropical areas, but its distribution is limited by its strong sensitivity to cold. It needs high humidity, humus rich soil and, after the seedling stage, full sunlight.
The palm hearts are eaten, prepared as a salad, among other things. The type or the salad made from it is also known as "millionaire's salad".
