Demetrios von Amerika (birth name Demetrios Trakatellis ; Greek Δημήτριος Τρακατέλλης ; born February 1, 1928 in Thessaloniki , Greece ) is a former Elder Archbishop of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and Exarch from the Atlantic to the Pacific .

Life

Demetrios' parents were Georgia and Christos Trakatellis. He began his training at the Theological College of Athens University , where he graduated with honors in 1950. In 1960 he became a deacon ordained and 1964 priests ordained . In 1965 he went to the United States , where he graduated from the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and received his Ph.D. acquired. He later returned to the University of Athens, where he obtained his doctorate in theology in 1977 . He then served from 1967 as an auxiliary bishop for the Archbishop of Athens . In 1968 he refused an appointment as metropolitan of the dioceses of Attica and Megaris , as the Greek military dictatorship was spreading at this time .

From 1983 to 1993 he was professor of Biblical Studies and Christian Origins at the Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline (Massachusetts) and was visiting professor at Harvard Divinity School (1984-85 and 1988-89). In 1993 he returned to Athens to work in the Orthodox Archdiocese of Athens .

On September 18, 1999, he was installed in the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity as a primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America . The cathedral on New York City's Upper East Side serves as the Archdiocese's national cathedral .

On November 26, 2015, the Archdiocese announced the elevation to the Gerontiki Eparchy of the Ecumenical Patriarchate .

After three unsuccessful attempts on the part of the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomäus I in 2017/18 to persuade Demetrios to resign as a consequence of the scandal surrounding the new building of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church , Demetrios announced his resignation at the beginning of May 2019. Metropolitan Elpidophoros of Bursa was elected as his successor on May 11th

Academy and Holy Synod

Demetrios was elected a member of the Academy of Athens in November 2002 and was admitted in 2003. On February 19, 2004 he was elected to the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

Demetrios offered prayers at the Democratic National Convention on August 27, 2008 and at the Republican National Convention on September 4, 2008, and also delivered the blessing at the Presidential Inaugural Luncheon on January 21, 2013.

The brother, Antonios Trakatellis , is a member of the European Parliament for the Greek Nea Dimokratia .
