The Democratic Union ( Hebrew : המחנה הדמוקרטי, HaMaḥaneh HaDemokrati ) was a left-wing party alliance in Israel that was founded in July 2019 and consisted of the parties Meretz , Democratic Israel and the Green Movement .

history

Ehud Barak , who was Israel's Prime Minister from 1999 to 2001 and who had withdrawn from politics for some time, founded a new party called Democratic Israel in June 2019. Following the establishment of the party, Barak called on the parties of the center-left spectrum to unite with a view to the parliamentary elections in September 2019 . However, Jair Lapid , co-chair of Kachol Lavan , rejected such proposals. Awoda chairman Amir Peretz also ruled out a joint electoral list with other parties after his party had agreed with Gescher to stand together. Stav Shaffir , who had previously sharply criticized her party's alliance with Gescher, left the Avoda and turned to forming an alliance of the remaining left parties. The joint electoral list was announced on July 25; It was led by Meretz boss Nitzan Horowitz , followed in second and third place by Shaffir and Jair Golan . Ehud Barak made it to tenth place on the list at his own request.

In the election on September 17, 2019, the Democratic Union won 4.34% of the vote and five seats in parliament. Nitzan Horowitz, Stav Shaffir, Jair Golan, Tamar Zandberg and Ilan Gilon entered the Knesset as MPs .

In the parliamentary elections in Israel 2020 on March 2, 2020, the Democratic Union did not run again.
