Denis Wiktorowitsch Kozhukhin , Russian Денис Викторович Кожухин , (born July 2, 1986 in Nizhny Novgorod ) is a Russian pianist.

Denis Kozhukhin was born in 1986 into a family of musicians in Nizhny Novgorod. Already at the age of four he received piano lessons from his mother. As a boy he attended the Balakirev School of Music, where he was tutored by Natalia Fish. From 2000 to 2007 Koshukhin studied piano at the Reina Sofia School of Music in Madrid with Dmitri Bashkirov and Claudio Martinez-Mehner . Here he graduated as the best in his year. After studying in Madrid, Kozhukhin was invited to the piano academy on Lake Como for in-depth studies. Here he took lessons from Fou Ts'ong , Stanislav Yudenitch , Peter Frankl , Boris Berman , Charles Rosen and Andreas Staier, among others . He completed his studies with Kirill Gerstein at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart.

In 2006 Kozhukhin won 3rd prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition , and in 2009 first prize at The Vendôme Prize . With the first prize at the Queen Elizabeth Competition in Brussels, 23-year-old Denis Kozhukhin finally stepped onto the international concert stage in 2010.

Kozhukhin quickly gained international fame from 2009/2010 and appeared at many renowned festivals and concert halls, including the Verbier Festival, where he won the Prix d'Honneur in 2003, the Progetto Martha Argerich in Lugano, the Philharmonie Berlin, the Philharmonie Cologne, at the Ruhr Piano Festival, the Rheingau Music Festival, the International Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival, in the Carnegie Hall, in the Gewandhaus Leipzig, in the Herkulessaal in Munich, in De Doelen Rotterdam, in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, in the Auditorio Nacional Madrid, in the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia Milan, in the Théâtre du Châtelet and in the Auditorium du Louvre Paris.

Denis Kozhukhin is in great demand with leading international orchestras and conductors and has played with well-known ensembles such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra , the Chicago Symphony , the San Francisco Symphony , the Vienna Symphony , the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra . Together with musicians from the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, Kozhukhin also gave concerts under the direction of Daniel Barenboim at the Salzburg Festival and in Buenos Aires.

In terms of chamber music, Kozhukhin has played with Leonidas Kavakos , Renaud and Gautier Capuçon , Janine Jansen , Vadim Repin , Julian Rachlin , Michael Barenboim , the Jerusalem Quartet , the Pavel Haas Quartet , Radovan Vlatković , Jörg Widmann and Alisa Weilerstein .

Denis Kozhukhin is "The man who stands in for Lang Lang ". In 2017 Kozhukhin spontaneously represented the Chinese keyboard god Lang Lang at the 8th Subscriber Concert of the Staatskapelle in the Konzerthaus Berlin under Daniel Barenboim with the 1st Piano Concerto by Rachmaninoff . Two years earlier, Kozhukhin had jumped in at Barenboim's State Opera Festival for Martha Argerich at similar short notice. Kozhukhin currently lives with his wife and son in Berlin-Konradshöhe .
