Denis Quilley

Denis Quilley OBE (also Dennis Quilley) (born December 26, 1927 in London , † October 5, 2003 in London) was a British actor and singer .

Quilley was a well-known British theater and film actor and singer. In the theater he made a name for himself as the most important Shakespeare interpreter alongside John Gielgud and Laurence Olivier . His film career began in 1955 with The Merchant of Venice , a film adaptation of the Shakespearean drama by Hal Burton . About 20 films followed, including Murder on the Orient Express (1974) and Evil Under the Sun (1982) based on Agatha Christie , King David (1985), The Shell Seekers based on Rosamunde Pilcher and, most recently, Cleopatra (1999). He also played in series such as Dancers in Mourning and Oresteia , as well as the Apostle Peter in the multi-part TV series Anno Domini (AD) - Battle of the Martyrs .

He played the role of Dr. Leon Sterndale in episode The Devil's Foot from the television series Sherlock Holmes .

He won the Laurence Olivier Award twice .

Quilley retired in 1999 and died of cancer in 2003.
