Dennis Moorman

Dennis Moorman (born March 27, 1940 in New York City , † December 15, 2002 there ) was an American jazz pianist , arranger and university professor.

Moorman came from a family of musicians; his parents were both pianists with whom he had his first lessons. His uncle Wilson Moorman was a percussionist; his aunt Melba Moore organist and pianist. After attending college, he did military service in the US Air Force and was a member of the Rocky Mountain Air Force Band in Denver. On his return to New York, he studied at the Manhattan School of Music , where he initially received his Bachelor and in 1973 his Master of Music. In 1984 he received his PhD from New York University. From the 1970s he was active as accompanist and musical director of numerous vocalists, such as Sammy Davis Jr. , Dakota Staton , Melba Moore, Brock Peters , Thelma Carpenter , Novella Nelson , Thelma Carpenter and Bette Midler ; He has also worked on several Broadway productions such as Fiddler on the Roof , Ain't MisBehavin ', Sophisticated Ladies , Uptown It's Hot, The Wiz and Timbuktu .

Moorman also worked in New York City from the late 1970s with Cecil McBee , with whom he appeared at the Sweet Basil jazz club , to be heard on his live albums Music from the Source and Compassion - Music from the Source Vol. 2 and the studio album Destiny's Dance . In 1982 he recorded the solo album Circles of Destiny ( India Navigation ) with his own compositions. In the 1980s and 1990s he played with Lisle Atkinson's neo-bass ensemble and performed with his own trio in New York jazz clubs. In the field of jazz he was involved in eight recording sessions between 1971 and 2001, most recently with Steve Adelson ( The New Sticket ).

Moorman taught as a professor at York College (City University of New York).
