Dennis Robertson (born August 14, 1956 in Aberdeen ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

Robertson has been blind since he was eleven. He attended the Royal Blind School in Edinburgh and received social training from Langside College . Between 1979 and 1988 he was a social worker in Greenock and then worked for the Guide Dogs for the Blind in Forfar . From 2005 he worked for the non-profit disabled aid organization North East Sensory Services . His sixth guide dog is called Mr. Q.

Political career

For the first time Robertson appeared in the Scottish General Election in 2007 for national elections. In his constituency of West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine , he received the second highest number of votes behind the Liberal Democrat Mike Rumbles and thus missed the entry into the Scottish Parliament . However, he was able to increase the SNP's share of the vote by 12.1%. In the course of constituency reform in 2011, the constituency of West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine was dissolved and largely replaced by the newly created constituency Aberdeenshire West , for whose mandate Robertson applied in the Scottish general election in 2011 . His 19-year-old daughter died during the election campaign of anorexia , which was the reason for his later commitment to educating people about eating disorders. Robertson won the direct mandate from Aberdeenshire West by a clear margin over Rumbles and subsequently moved into the Scottish Parliament for the first time. Robertson is Scotland's first blind MP.
