The Denton Bridge in the West African state of Gambia connects the mainland with the island of St. Mary's Island , on which the capital of the country Banjul is located.
description
The girder bridge spans 210 meters from west to east over Oyster Creek , a watercourse that connects the mangrove forest Tanbi Wetland Complex with the Atlantic Ocean . The Banjul-Serekunda Highway , the highway connecting Banjul with Kombo-St. , Runs over the 20-meter-wide, double-lane bridge . Mary Area connects where the cities of Serekunda and Bakau are located. It was officially opened in 1986 on the 21st anniversary of independence. In 2008 the bridge, which is part of the Banjul-Serekunda Highway, was equipped with so-called cat's eyes by a Gambier living in Germany .
The Denton Bridge is sometimes mockingly called " Check Point Charlie " because there are more police checks taking place at this point.
The new building replaced an older bridge built in 1915 and renewed in 1959, 25 meters further north. This approximately nine meter wide bridge has now been closed and is no longer in use.
Namesake
The Denton Bridge is named after Sir George Chardin Denton (1851-1928), who was governor of the British Gambia colony from 1900 to 1911 .
