State Security Department of the Republic of Lithuania

The State Security Department of the Republic of Lithuania (lit.Lietuvos Respublikos valstybės saugumo departamentas , VSD ) is an intelligence service that is assigned to the protection of the constitution in Lithuania . The service was founded on October 27, 1918 and is affiliated with the Ministry of the Interior of Lithuania .

Paksagate

The Lithuanian Presidential Office launched an investigation between 2003 and 2004 against the Lithuanian secret service VSD under the leadership of Mečys Laurinkus at the time . The VSD was accused of forging operational documents related to some privatization deals and the Paksas scandal . The reputation of the secret service has suffered as a result. The VSD brought the presumed involvement of the president to light through its information .

CIA secret prisons

The General Prosecutor's Office of Lithuania initiated preliminary investigations against the three former top officials of the VSD, Mečys Laurinkus , Arvydas Pocius and his deputy Dainius Dabašinskas . They were accused of not having or insufficiently informing the political leadership of the country about the cooperation of the VSD with the US secret service CIA in relation to the provision of locations for one or more secret prisons.
