action

The film begins its action in 1944. The orphan Marina has been evacuated from besieged Leningrad . Shortly after arriving at the naval base, where she works in the kitchen, she falls in love with Captain Marinin, who is returning from a successful mission. Marinin does not return the adolescents' love. He starts a relationship with a Swede. When he is with her one night, he is called to a mission. He does not obey this, whereupon his friend Galijev's boat goes on patrol and is sunk.

The secret service observes Marinin because his brother fought on the White Guard side in the civil war . Marinin is given the information that his brother, who died years ago, is still alive, and a trap is set for him when he goes in search of him. When he is about to be removed after his arrest, his submarine blocks the port exit. The port commander, at his own risk, has Marinin released so that he can attack a German convoy. The press reports that a large cargo ship was sunk and the submarine was also destroyed. One commemorates those who have fallen in duty. But the boat is damaged and towed back to the harbor by a fishing cutter. The secret service refrains from further pursuit of Marinin.
