templates
The books by the British author JRR Tolkien from 1954/1955 served as templates for the musical .
Lord of the Rings:
- The fellows
- The two Towers
- The return of the king (or the return of the king)
The story tells of the young hobbit Frodo Baggins and his companions who set out to destroy the one ring of the dark ruler Sauron . They have to travel across the fictional continent of Middle-earth , where they have many adventures to master.
Toronto
Kevin Wallace and his partner Saul Zaentz - owner of the stage and film rights and producer of the 1978 animated film "The Lord of the Rings" - produced a stage version in collaboration with theater owner David Mirvish from Toronto and advertising specialist Michael Chole , in which the libretto ( Book and lyrics) by Shaun McKenna and Matthew Warchus and the composition ( music ) by AR Rahman , Värttinä and Christopher Nightingale .
65 actors were involved in this almost four-hour version . She was seen at the Princess of Wales Theater in Toronto, Canada . The production was about 26.9 million US.Dollar . The first performance began on February 4, 2006. The musical received mixed press reviews, but was generally well received by the public. and closed on September 3, 2006 after seven months of play.
London
The slightly shortened (but still three hours) and newly revised show had its official premiere on June 19, 2007 at the Theater Royal, Drury Lane . The same creative team as in Toronto also worked here. The London version featured 50 actors and it cost "only" $ 25 million, making the "Lord of the Rings Musical" one of the most expensive productions ever to be staged in the West End or anywhere outside of Las Vegas . In contrast to the Canadian press, the English press was more benevolent. When it closed on July 19, 2008, the play was performed for the 492nd time after 14 months and attracted over 700,000 visitors.
Cologne
In Cologne, the “Lord of the Rings Musical” should open its doors again in a German version at the end of 2009. A new theater was to be built near the former Kalk chemical factory for around 20 million euros . For the production of the musical itself, 18.5 million was estimated. The theater should be reminiscent of a ship “that takes visitors on a journey”. The premiere of the musical should take place on December 6, 2009.
Since the contract went straight to the agency of the architect Hanspeter Kottmair , however, there was a controversy among various city council members as to why a competition for the contract was not advertised beforehand. In early February 2009, the withdrawal of Art.emis, one of the main sponsors of the musical, was announced.
World tour
An English-language world tour is set to premiere in 2015.
