During the composer's lifetime, the 60 études progressives des pianiste virtuose were officially admitted to the Paris Conservatory . To this day, they are among the best-known exercises in pianistic training. The piano technique is presented systematically and in a musically simple form. Special emphasis is placed on the development of the left hand and the equal weight training of all fingers.

content

The book is divided into three increasing sections. The first part comprises a total of 20 exercises, which count as "preliminary exercises" so that they can also be mastered by beginners. Part two includes exercises 21 to 43, which are considered "further exercises for developing a virtuoso technique". Exercises 44 to 60 (third section) serve as "virtuoso exercises for mastering the greatest technical difficulties".

According to Hanon, only when the respective exercise or the respective section has been mastered should one move on to the next part. Ideally, these 60 exercises should be repeated daily. Starting from C major , a transposition into other keys is recommended for most of the exercises .

distribution

The collection, which also contains verbal instructions, has been translated into numerous languages and is still today as published or included in collections together with comparable works such as Opus 599 by Carl Czerny and Op 16 by Aloys Schmitt .

The exercises were adapted to other instruments. A Hanon for guitar , banjo and mandolin appeared in tablature , a Hanon for trumpet and a Hanon for tuba .

As further modifications, Hanons appeared for certain styles, for example for the area of blues , a rock Hanon , another for Latin American salsa music and two editions of different degrees of difficulty for the area of jazz . The Hanon for bass guitar is also concentrated on the respective style areas in which the instrument appears.

On YouTube there are numerous sound samples of the exercises for piano, in different tempos , partly with instructions and partly with accompanying musical text as well as for the other instruments and styles for which sheet music has been published.

criticism

The original exercises are viewed critically by some experts such as Philippe Cassard , as they are described as too dry. The exercises are too reductive, mechanical, which is why they have an inhibiting effect.
