action

The young Eveline Braden returns to the family castle after a long time in a girls' boarding school where she was brought up. Her father receives her in a very hypothermic manner, and she confronts her with hatred, which the father had already hurled at his now deceased wife, Eveline mother. The girl finds emotional support only in young Heinz Bergen, her uncle, and old Margarete. Eveline and Heinz fall in love with each other, but Heinz holds back with outbursts of emotion because he finds himself too old for Eveline. Your father has other plans anyway. Since he is in debt up to the button, the old man plans to marry Eveline to the neighbor Baron von Sanden, who is extremely wealthy and at the same time his main believer. But since Eveline doesn't love Sanden, she runs in desperation to Margarete so that she can try to influence Eveline's father. But he coldly rejects Eveline's advocate and claims that his unloved daughter must be happy that anyone is willing to take her, given how dishonorable Eveline's mother has behaved and thus sullied the family reputation. Eveline listened to this uncomfortable argument and now begs Margarete to tell her what happened then and why her mother allegedly behaved "dishonorably".

The old woman now tells the whole story. Eveline's mother had once married this Luftikus, who soon celebrated the fortune that had been brought into the marriage. Eveline's mother was very unhappy in this marriage because her father soon turned out to be a despot. He claimed that his wife had an affair with Heinz, whereupon his hatred not only hit his wife, but also spread to his daughter Eveline (who he presumes is not his daughter at all). At no time had Heinz Bergen been Eveline's mother more than just a good, loyal friend, in any case by no means her lover. While still on his deathbed, Heinz promised the terminally ill woman that he would take care of Eveline and protect her from her father's hatred. Margarete rushes to Bergen and implores him to save Eveline from her father and the unwanted marriage to the baron. Heinz then goes to his brother to speak openly among men. There was a violent exchange of words. When Heinz leaves again, his brother is boiling with rage. Eveline runs to her lover to warn him of the consequences of her father's anger. In this moment of great bond, the two confess their love for each other. A little later, Margarete rushed in and announced that Eveline's father was seriously injured. He wanted to torch the whole lock straight away to destroy a document that was seriously incriminating him. Lying dying, the father asks his daughter and brother for forgiveness.

criticism

“A very excellent film that met with unanimous applause from those who appeared. He is particularly characterized by the excellent teamwork between Lotte Neumann and Erich Kaiser-Tietz [sic!]. A truly rare pleasure to immerse yourself in the game of the two, where one is forced to think how much an artist can make of a role that he grasps and thinks through with all his soul! The direction also has its share in the completed whole and must be praised. "
