The Opium War ( Chinese  鴉片戰爭  /  鸦片战争 , Pinyin Yāpiàn Zhànzhēng ) is a Chinese film by Xie Jin from 1997. It was the most expensive Chinese film until the premiere of Chen Kaige's drama The Emperor and His Assassins (1999) .

Brief description

In this historical drama you get to know the individual fates of the people who occupy a key position in the historical events during the 1st Opium War . This tells you what led to the fact that the Chinese Empire had to cede Hong Kong to Great Britain .

The film is set in the Empire of China, at the time of the Qing Dynasty . In 1838, the Chinese emperor Daoguang gave the official Lin Zexu the order to take action against English opium dealers and therefore sent him to Canton as chief commissioner . To the displeasure of the English opium dealers who make great profits by trading in opium. When Lin Zexu had tons of opium destroyed and put the English opium dealers under "house arrest", the British government sent the British foreign trade inspector Captain Charles Elliot to Canton in 1839 . Captain Elliot persuades the opium dealers to hand over their opium to the British government, allowing the British to go to war with China in 1840.
