The Rat God is a Yugoslavian feature film from 1976. It is a mixture of horror film and thriller and is based on motifs from the story The Pied Piper by Alexander Grin .
action
The film is set in Czechoslovakia after the First World War in 1925: there is high unemployment and political extremists attract supporters. Professor Boskovic learns about a supernatural giant rat in an old book. This makes use of the people and transforms them into obedient giant rodents that have human-like shape. The supporters of the giant rat are therefore not immediately recognizable. The giant rat wants world domination and subverts society with its loyal followers. Together with a young writer and his daughter, the professor fights against the project. The young writer, who has fallen in love with the professor's daughter, discovers a secret event and escapes the giant rat's captors at the last second. When the city administration is already firmly under control of the rat people, the three strike: The professor has developed an anti-rat spray and is fighting the rodents. When he is murdered, the writer completes his work and can ultimately win.
criticism
The Lexicon of International Films wrote:
“The award-winning Croatian film uses the ingredients of the genre with rare skill. Political reflections on the struggle between good and evil and the nature of fascism, which threatens to break out again in times of crisis, are woven into the story. "
49th Academy Awards, 1977
The film was the Yugoslav contribution to the race for the Oscar for best foreign film.
