The focus of the story is Dieter, a young person who, unwanted at home, finds neither support nor a role model there. Although he has a 10-class degree, he works as an unskilled worker for the Reichsbahn. He is rebellious and undisciplined and gets moved from one place to another. He finds connection with a group of his own age who - like him - don't know what to do with their free time. So he is constantly on the verge of crime.
