The Pfaffe Amis from Der Stricker

Der Stricker was a prolific Middle High German poet in the first half of the 13th century.

Little is known about his living conditions, except that he was presumably of low origin and had to earn a living as a traveling and professional poet. Whether his name was a descriptive "stage name ", as it was traditionally worn by many poets , for example in the meaning of "the verse knotter", or whether it is a proper name, is disputed. Linguistic and dialectal peculiarities suggest that it came from the southern Rhine Franconia or from the eastern Franconia; However, his poetic career shows him predominantly in Austria. His texts are likely to have been written between 1220 and 1250.

His work includes u. a. Large and small forms of the epic from different genres :

The pranks of his priest Amis , the main figure in the Schwank collection of the same name , can later be found in other literary figures, e. B. at Till Eulenspiegel .
