The whale in the water tower is a picture book by Rüdiger Stoye published by Broschek in 1971 and has been reprinted several times, most recently in 2008 by Moritz Verlag. By Sándor Ferenczy was also in 1974 as a radio play edited.

The rapidly growing "fish" that Jan caught from a tributary of the Elbe and kept in his bathtub turns out to be a young whale. When the bathtub becomes too small, a large basin in the water tower , where Jan's father is a guard , seems to be a suitable shelter. But soon there is not enough space here either.

Reviews

The Eppendorfer wrote: "Children open their mouths when they hear what has happened here". In a contemporary review, Westermann's monthly magazine highlighted the “fantastic story in the middle of our modern environment”. Even Klaus Doderer's Encyclopedia of Children's Literature from 1975 certainly looks the book of fantastic designs. For Stefanie Eckmann-Schmechta from the children's book couch , the book is still "gripping and fascinating picture book entertainment (...) with great pictures", even more than 30 years after its first publication. The book was placed on the list of honor for the Hans Christian Andersen Prize .

radio play

The radio play was realized by Walt Disney Musikverlag with speakers from Hamburg: in addition to Gerda Gmelin , Karl-Heinz Kreienbaum , Hermann Lenschau and Dénes Törzs u. a. also class 7c from 1974 at the Hamburg-Bramfeld high school .
