The secret aerial warfare of the superpowers is a documentary film by Dirk Pohlmann from 2004.

content

In his documentary, which was broadcast on January 28, 2004 on the station arte , Pohlmann shows how the American air forces undertook reconnaissance flights from their headquarters in Wiesbaden, partly into the Soviet Union. American planes were shot down by Soviet interceptors . The film shows interviews with former Soviet and American pilots and previously little-known shooting footage from Soviet shooting cameras . Pohlmann cited evidence that surviving pilots had been hidden by the Soviet Union, with the pilot who shot down an aircraft on April 9, 1950, declaring that he had counted 10 parachutes.

reception

In a review in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , the historian Michael Jeismann came to the conclusion that this "excellent documentary [...] not only provides fascinating archive material about these reconnaissance flights", but also investigates "unresolved cases". This is how Pohlmann's “persistent research [...] ends before the silence of a Soviet-American commission”, which was supposed to clarify whether “downed pilots were rescued and then held in camps”. It was "almost unbelievable" also that "the CIA 's own combat aircraft (unarmed meant reconnaissance aircraft of the type U-2 ) had with which they undertook on their own operations." The film emphasizes "the inhuman cynicism of the two military machines in a drastic manner that is intensified by sobriety".
