Derek Williams (born March 11, 1965 in Stockwell , England ) is a retired British heavyweight boxer . He was a European and Commonwealth champion .

career

Williams won his professional debut with a technical knockout in round 6. It was followed by three knockout victories and the first defeat against Ron Ellis. In 1988 he won the Commonwealth title through a classic knockout in round 4. The following year he boxed for the vacant European championship title; his Commonwealth title was also at stake in this battle. Williams won the fight, which was scheduled for 12 rounds, in the first round by technical knockout. Two months later he lost his European title to Frenchman Jean-Maurice Chanet by unanimous decision over 12 rounds. The rematch, which took place three months later and in which it was again about the European title, brought the same result. In 1991 he defended the Commonwealth title against Jimmy Thunder. In the same year he defeated David Bey in a no-title fight .

On April 30, 1992 there was a fight against the later heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis at the Royal Albert Hall . This battle involved both Williams 'Commonwealth and Lewis' European and British championships. Williams had no chance and was severely knocked out in the third round. After this defeat things went downhill; six defeats followed, including against Bert Cooper and José Ribalta .

Williams retired in 1992.
