David Bey (born March 11, 1957 in Philadelphia , † September 13, 2017 in Camden ) was an American heavyweight boxer.

amateur

Bey was an excellent amateur boxer, winning his first 18 fights and the US Army competition.

professional

Bey made his debut in 1981 and defeated the future, undisputed world heavyweight champion James "Buster" Douglas in the second round by technical knockout. Douglas had only fought five fights at this point. He added his first knockout defeat to George Chaplin in his 9th fight and defeated Greg Page over 12 rounds on points in his 14th fight , thus securing the USBA title .

In March 1985, Bey boxed for the world championship against Larry Holmes . Despite a strong performance he had no chance, had to go down twice and was knocked out in the 10th round. Three months later he lost to Trevor Berbick by TKo in round 11. In 1986 he boxed against James Smith and Joe Bugner , among others . Both fights were scheduled for 10 rounds, both fights he lost unanimously on points.

In 1987 he boxed against the undefeated Johnny Du Plooy and Tyrell Biggs . He lost to Biggs through technical knockout in round 6 and against Plooy through classic knockout in round 9.

Bey was inactive for three years and only got back into the ring in 1990, including against the undefeated Bruce Seldon . Seldon knocked him out in the 10th and final round. The following year he boxed against Joe Hipp, David Jaco and Derek Williams . He lost against Hipp and Williams, against Jaco he boxed a draw.

In 1993 he boxed among other things against the eventual European champion Željko Mavrović , who had only five fights. Bey never had a chance to win and was knocked out in the fourth round. He was able to make his last fight victorious when he boxed against David Jaco for the second time. He defeated him by a technical knockout in round 8.
