Željko "Zed" Mavrović (born February 17, 1969 in Zagreb , Yugoslavia ) is a former Croatian boxer and European heavyweight champion.

amateur

Mavrović took part as an amateur in the Olympic Games in 1988 and 1992 , but without much success. In Seoul he was defeated in the first round against the South Korean Baik Hyun-man , in 1992 in Barcelona in the second round against the American Danell Nicholson . He also took part in the European Championships in Athens in 1989 (loss to Axel Schulz ) and in Gothenburg in 1991 (loss to Arnold Vanderlyde ). His greatest success was winning the Mediterranean Games in 1991. In 1991 and 1992 he was Croatian national champion. In addition, Mavrović won before Croatia's independence a Yugoslav junior championship in 1987 and in 1988 in Podgorica and in 1989 in Zagreb the Yugoslav senior championship. In the first Yugoslav league he boxed for the boxing club Rijeka .

Professional career

In 1993 Mavrović moved to the professional camp and signed with Wilfried Sauerland . On April 11, 1995 he won the European heavyweight title with a TKO victory in the eleventh round against the Frenchman Christophe Bizot. He successfully defended the title several times over the next few years.

Mavrović was considered a candidate for the heavyweight world title, but he lost on September 26, 1998 against Lennox Lewis as a mandatory challenger the fight for the WBC belt. He boxed courageously and survived the fight without precipitation, but at no point had a real chance of victory. After the fight, he was rumored to have contracted a viral infection, lost a lot of weight and retired from boxing in December 2000. An attempted change in diet after the World Cup fight was also speculated as the reason for the alleged illness. Mavrović now lives near Požega , runs an organic farm, the products of which he sells quite successfully, and works for Croatian television as a co-commentator on boxing matches.

He is often present at the fights of his friend and former sparring partner Stipe Drviš , former WBA light heavyweight champion.
