Stipe Drviš , known in Germany under the name Stipe Drews, (born June 8, 1973 in Makarska , SR Croatia ) is a former Croatian professional boxer and world light heavyweight champion according to the version of the WBA association.
amateur
As an amateur, Drviš took part in the European Championships in Vejle in 1996 , but lost in the third fight against the Italian Pietro Aurino , who eventually also won the European Championship. That same year he was for the Olympic Games in Atlanta nominated. After he was able to defeat the Uzbek Timur Ibragimow in the second round, he was defeated in the quarter-finals by the South Korean representative Lee Seung-bae. His participation in the amateur world championship in Budapest in 1997 brought him little success, he failed in the first round. At the Adriatic Games in 1997 he came second and won the Croatian national championship six times. As an amateur boxer, Drviš achieved 90 victories in 100 fights.
Professional career
The southpaw Drviš began his professional career in 1999. On February 8, 2003, he became European light heavyweight champion by winning points over the Italian Silvio Branco . Originally, Thomas Ulrich provided as Branco's opponents, but had to cancel after Ulrich injury a few hours before the fight, Drvis jumped at short notice and secured the vacant title.
After three title defenses, however, he put down the belt to fight in a WBC elimination match against the Australian Paul Briggs . In this fight on August 15, 2004, however, Drviš went down three times, and three points were deducted for knee and head butts, so that after twelve rounds he was clearly defeated on points.
After three development fights, he boxed again on January 7, 2006 for the vacant European title, beating Antonio Brancalion from Italy on points. He defended the belt in May 2006 against Kai Kurzawa and was scheduled for another WBC eliminator. His opponent should be the undefeated American Chad Dawson . However, the fight was canceled and Drews should now box on February 24, 2007 against the WBA world champion Silvio Branco. This fight was canceled because of a flu-like infection with Stipe Drviš. On April 28, 2007 the fight in Oberhausen was rescheduled, which Stipe Drviš was able to decide on points and thus became the new world champion according to the WBA version.
On December 16, 2007, Stipe Drviš boxed against Danny Green in Perth . Drviš lost his WBA belt in the first defense of the title because he was clearly defeated by the Australian over twelve rounds on points.
Personal
Stipe Drviš, also known as the “spider man” because of his speed and long arms, is 1.96 meters tall. He lived in Hamburg and trained there with Michael Timm , trainer at Universum Box-Promotion and himself a former European light middleweight champion ( 1985 ). The trained car mechanic is married and has a daughter.
