Deryck Guyler (born April 29, 1914 in Wallasey , Cheshire , Great Britain , † October 7, 1999 in Brisbane , Australia ) was a British actor who was mainly known from radio and television broadcasts.

Life

The son of a jeweler initially worked as a jeweler himself. Then he took up theology studies at a Church of England College , which he dropped out after a year.

Among other activities, he worked as a singer at the Music Hall in London, but joined the Royal Air Force shortly after the outbreak of World War II . In 1942 he was released after a war injury and instead joined the BBC Repertory Company .

For many years he was a fixture on the BBC radio broadcasts. Guyler embodied comical characters, but also sonorous father and uncle characters with great authority. He starred from 1946 alongside Tommy Handley in the long-running comedy series ITMA , the crime series Inspector Scott Investigates and for eleven years in Eric Barker's Just Fancy .

Guyler also developed into a sought-after and busy actor on television. He played alongside numerous English comedy greats such as Eric Sykes (as "PC Korky" in Sykes ), Hattie Jacques and Harry Worth . Particularly popular was Guyler's portrayal of the caretaker "Potter" in the school series Please Sir , which rose over the years from a marginal role to the actual leading role. The "Potter" corresponded to a role type that Guyler often embodied in his career: the friendly and helpful civil servant, clerk, police officer or civil servant.

His feature film productions include the Beatles film A Hard Day's Night ( Yeah Yeah Yeah ), in which he played a police officer, the Walt Disney comedy Who Stole Our Dinosaur? (with Peter Ustinov ) as well as the carry on… comedy Das totally crazy hospital .

In addition, Guyler worked extensively as a spokesperson for advertising and documentary films.

After his retirement, Guyler, who had studied the Bible intensively since converting to Catholicism in 1945, moved with his wife to Australia, where one of their sons lived.
