Desanka Maksimović

Desanka Maksimović ( Cyrillic  Десанка Максимовић ; born May 16, 1898 in Rabrovica near Valjevo ; † February 11, 1993 in Belgrade ) was a Serbian author, poet and member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts .

Life

Maksimović was born in 1898 as the eldest of eight children of the teacher Mihailo Maksimović and his wife Draginja. Immediately after the birth, the father was transferred and the family moved to Brankovina , where Maksimović grew up. She attended high school in Valjevo and then studied from 1919 to 1923 Comparative Literature, History and Art History at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Belgrade . Maksimović was a teacher of the Serbian language at various schools from 1923 to 1953 . First she taught at the grammar school in Obrenovac , then at the third girls’s grammar school in Belgrade. Then she taught for a year at a grammar school in Dubrovnik and then at the first girls’s grammar school in the Serbian capital. In August 1933 she married Sergei Slastikov. The couple had no children.

On her numerous travels through Yugoslavia she made friends with many writers and poets, including Miloš Crnjanski , Ivo Andrić , Isidora Sekulić , Gustav Krklec , Branko Ćopić and Oton Župančič . The poet also translated works from Russian, Slovenian, Bulgarian and French into Serbian.

Maksimović died in Belgrade in 1993 at the age of 94. She was buried in Brankovina.

Maksimović published his first poems in the magazine Misao in 1920 . One of her most important poems was Krvava Bajka ( Bloody Fairy Tale ), which tells of the terror of German soldiers in World War II . The author wrote it after German Wehrmacht soldiers shot 300 children in the Kraljevo and Kragujevac massacres . However, the work was only published after the end of the war.

Maksimović was best known for her natural poetry and love poems. In her texts, she mostly described village life in an idyllic, haunting manner. Desanka Maksimovic has also written novels and short stories on social and political topics, as well as children's books, short stories and travelogues. She published more than 50 books.

Maksimović received many literary awards, including the Vuk Prize, the Njegoš Prize (1984) and the AVNOJ Prize. In 1988 she received the Golden Wreath of the Evenings of Poetry in Struga . She is an honorary citizen of Valjevo . A statue of her was erected in Valjevo while she was still alive, although she protested. On December 17, 1959 Maksimović was an associate member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and on December 16, 1965 a regular member.

In 1985 the primary school in Brankovina was rebuilt. Today the school bears her name. Other schools in Futog and Belgrade are also named after Maksimović. After her death, the Desanka Maksimović Foundation was established, which awards the Desanka Maksimović Prize.

In 1996 and 1998 stamps with the portrait of the deceased poet appeared.
