Map of Desroches |
The island of Desroches is located 230 km southwest of Mahé , the main island of the Seychelles , and belongs to the Amiranten group . It is the only island in the atoll of the same name and has a land area of around 3.24 km². Desroches is 6.2 km long and 1 km wide, but measures just under half at the narrowest point.
Its coast is lined with a 15 km long fine sandy beach. It got its name in 1771 from Chevalier de Roslan, who commanded the ship L'Heure du Berger and wanted to commemorate Governor des Roches of the " Iles de France et de Bourbon ". The British also called the island Wood Island because of its dense tree population . The island was once the main source of Seychellois copra . Today the island is home to the Four Seasons Resort , a small luxury hotel with just over 100 rooms.
