Desulfobacter is a genus of bacteria. Desulfobacter is one of the sulfate-reducing bacteria; the reduction of sulfur compounds generates energy, which is then converted into further metabolism. One also speaks of desulfurication or sulfate respiration.
features
The cells are rod-shaped with rounded ends, slightly curved or vibrion-shaped. If they are mobile, it is through a single, polar flagellum . Spores are not formed. The grief test turns out negative. Desulfobacter can only live in the absence of oxygen ( anaerobically ). Species of Desulfobacter are mostly found in the sea, some also live in anoxic fresh water .
metabolism
As mentioned above, Desulfobacter uses sulfate respiration. Acetate serves as an electron donor within the respiratory chain in energy metabolism. Sulfur compounds such as B. sulfate , sulfite or thiosulfate serve as electron acceptors . Here, the oxidation of acetate brings electrons into an electron transport chain . A proton motor force is generated, which ultimately leads to the formation of ATP. As an electron acceptor, the sulfur compound takes up the electrons again and is reduced to hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S). Acetate also serves as a carbon source. Many species can nitrogen fixing ( nitrogen fixation ).
