Detlev Ellmers

Detlev Ellmers (born March 12, 1938 in Vegesack ) is a German prehistorian and art historian. His specialty is ship archeology.

biography

Ellmers grew up near Bremen in Osterholz-Scharmbeck and Mahndorf . From 1957 he studied at the University of Tübingen , the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and the University of Kiel German , Prehistory and Early History and Art History . In 1968 he was awarded a doctorate in Kiel with a thesis on early medieval merchant shipping in Central and Northern Europe. phil. PhD. He was one of three founding directors of the German Maritime Museum (DSM) in Bremerhaven . For 31 years - until 2002 - he was Managing Director at the top of the DSM, played a key role in building it up and ensured its international scientific establishment. In 2009 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.
