Detroit International Jazz Festival

The Detroit International Jazz Festival or Detroit Jazz Festival is an annual jazz festival in Detroit that has existed since 1980 . It was founded by Robert McCabe, Midge Ellis (1924-2015) and Detroit Renaissance and takes place in Hart Plaza urban park on Labor Day weekend. The Detroit International Jazz Festival Foundation (founded in 2006) is the sponsor.

History of the festival

From 1980 to 1991 they had an exchange program with the Montreux Jazz Festival (therefore also called the Montreux-Detroit Festival). From 1991 to 2005 it was at the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts in Detroit. In 2005, it received support from the philanthropist and chairwoman of Mack Avenue Records, Gretchen Valade, and the Knight Foundation, after main sponsor Ford Motor Company dropped out. It was named the Detroit International Jazz Festival and extended north to Campus Martius Park.

The Festival Foundation also generally supports jazz in Detroit, organizes other concerts and programs for young talent. Here were, among others, Dave Brubeck , Mulgrew Miller , The Manhattan Transfer , Dave Holland , Regina Carter on. In 2012 Wynton Marsalis , Chick Corea , Sonny Rollins , Wayne Shorter , Gary Burton , Pat Metheny and Joe Lovano performed here . The top acts of the 40th July Festival 2019 were Stanley Clarke , Pat Metheny and Danilo Pérez .
