The German-Kazakh University ( DKU ; Russian Казахстанско-Немецкий университет , Kazakh Қазақстан-Неміс Университеті ) in the Kazakh city of Almaty is a private university with about 720 students enrolled in winter semester 2019/20. The sponsor is the “German-Kazakh Cooperation in Training” fund .

history

The university was founded on a private initiative with the aim of training specialists based on the German model in 1999. The university is supported by a "social fund" (comparable to an eV according to German legal opinion) on a non-profit basis. Organization). In addition to the Vice-Rector Olga Moskowtschenko, members of the fund are members of the German partner universities Hans-Christian Brauweiler , Otto Hammer and Laszlo Ungvari. In 2004 the DKU received a special permit from the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan in order to be able to teach in part according to the German curriculum . In the 2007/2008 academic year, courses based on German standards were introduced. Very good students can acquire a double degree in cooperation with one of eleven German universities. The DKU is funded by the German Foreign Office for the period 2007–2020 through a project as part of the “Export of Study Programs” program. The project sponsor from 2007 to December 31, 2014 was the International University Institute Zittau, which was an independent university institution of the Free State of Saxony until 2012 and was incorporated into the University of Excellence TU Dresden on January 1, 2013 through the University Freedom Act passed in September 2012.

From May 2007 to October 2015, the German lawyer Johann Wilhelm Gerlach , who was previously President of the Free University of Berlin, was rector and president of the university. The predecessor in office was Bodo Lochmann . At the beginning of the 2014/2015 academic year, the positions of Rector and President were no longer occupied in personal union. From September 1, 2014, the former Vice-Rector Olga Moskowtschenko was Rector. Markus Kaiser was President from October 1, 2015. Since January 1, 2019, the long-standing President of the Technical University of Wildau, László Ungvári, has been the president and since April 8, 2019 also the rector of the university in personal union.

On September 3, 2008, a "Government Agreement between the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan on further cooperation in the development of the German-Kazakh University in Almaty" was concluded in Astana. This confirms and defines mutual support from a political, financial and academic point of view. This was preceded by a "joint declaration on further cooperation in the development of the German-Kazakh University between the Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan" on February 1, 2007 in Berlin.

At the beginning of the academic year 2009/2010, the DKU also had the joint former embassy / consulate rooms of the diplomatic missions of the Federal Republic of Germany , France and the United Kingdom at ul. Furmanova / ul. Kurmangasi rented.

The tuition fees amount from the academic year 2019/2020 per year in a bachelor's degree program 850,000 tenge , in a Master's program 900,000 tenge. The second higher education costs 100,000 tenge per semester for the entire study period of two and a half years. The DKU has a scholarship program which in many cases can reduce tuition fees by up to 100%. In addition, there are living grants for financing accommodation in Almaty for men and women who live further away from Almaty.

Classes at the German-Kazakh University are held in Russian and English . The German language is taught at the university. From the third year of study onwards, lessons are also in German - u. a. through the use of German guest lecturers from the partner universities. The DKU has developed a special multilingual concept.
