The German European School Manila (DESM) (English: German European School Manila, GESM ) is a German school abroad recognized by the Foreign Office in Parañaque City in the greater Manila area in the Philippines .

It is also accredited by the Philippine Education Authority, recognized by the IBO and part of the international network of UNESCO project schools .

The DESM is a G-8 school which teaches in its German branch up to grade 10 according to German curricula and educational standards.

Together with the Lycée Français de Manille (LFM) it forms the umbrella organization European International School (EIS) and shares with it the facilities and facilities on the Eurocampus Manila in Parañaque . The Manila campus was the first of its kind. There are only six Eurocampus schools worldwide.

The school offer ranges from kindergarten and preschool to the advanced level leading to the International Baccalaureate .

In 2011, the DESM was certified as an excellent German school abroad by the federal and state inspection in the first round. This status was confirmed in a new inspection in 2017.

DESM is divided into two different areas, the German and the international branch. She also works closely with her French partner school, the French School Manila.

In the German branch, the secondary school leaving  certificate is offered  at the end of grade 9, the secondary school leaving certificate at the end of grade 10 and, also at the end of grade 10, a final examination for the intermediate level to transfer to the upper secondary level. This final exam corresponds to the central class work in Germany, but these are expanded to include oral exams.

The international branch follows the IBO's "Primary Years Program" in the international primary school (grades 1–5) and the preceding pre-school year of the international kindergarten . At the end of middle school (grades 6-10), which follows the Cambridge curriculum, students in the international department take the IGCSE . In grades 9 and 10 they also acquire the DSD I , in grade 12 the DSD II , which is important for access to universities in Germany.

The German branch leads to the intermediate level exams for the Hauptschule, Realschule and for the transition to the qualification phase of the upper level of the Gymnasium.

In the upper level, students from the German and international branches can complete the International Baccalaureate Diploma program up to the end of year 12 , either in the general or in the special mixed-language form of the Internationales Baccalaureate, called GIB for short. At the GIB, biology and history, mathematics and chemistry are taught and tested in German. Together with the DSD II , the students acquire the general university entrance qualification for Germany.

history

The German school was founded in 1980 under the name Jose Rizal School in honor of the Filipino national hero of the same name. It is recognized by the Philippine Ministry of Education. In 1992 the Jose Rizal School and École Française de Manille merged to form the Eurocampus. The name Jose Rizal School had already been changed to “German European School” after an international branch had been set up , like the German School Singapore .

In 2004 the name of the joint school was changed to " European International School " (EIS). The French school is now called "Lycée français de Manille".
