The Deutsche Lichtbild-Gesellschaft ( DLG , later Deulig ) was a state-mediated German film company with headquarters in Berlin during the First World War and the Weimar Republic .

history

During the First World War , German industry, especially the Rhenish-Westphalian heavy industry, had developed an interest in a central propaganda organization that worked according to commercial principles and was intended to arouse sympathy for its goals and interests at home and abroad. On the initiative of Alfred Hugenberg and Ludwig Klitzsch , the Deutsche Lichtbild-Gesellschaft e. V. founded, which immediately began with the production and distribution of cultural and feature films . Kitzsch also became managing director on February 9, 1917. Erich Ludendorff and the Supreme Army Commandwere opponents of the DLG because they were planning to set up their own propaganda organization. The Federal Foreign Office, on the other hand, only refused direct financial support because such subsidies would have damaged the company's credibility.

As early as December 1, 1916, the " Balkan-Orient-Film-Gesellschaft " was founded on behalf of the Foreign Office. It was commissioned with the purchase and distribution of films in the Balkans and the Middle East Company was transferred on January 22, 1917, ensuring stable sales of their production. The company was based in Berlin , with branches in Sofia and Constantinople . The background to the creation of the Balkan-Orient-Film-Gesellschaft was the attempt to displace all of DLG's market competitors in the supply of Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey with German film propaganda. This meant that Deutsche Bank in particular saw its interests threatened, as it - like the heavy industry in Rhenish and Westphalia - owned raw material sources and sales markets.

The dispute culminated on December 18, 1917 with the founding of Ufa . After months of negotiations, the two companies formed an interest group in the spring of 1918, in which Ufa decided not to produce its own commercial propaganda films and agreed to distribute DLG propaganda films in Germany, especially in its own cinemas . In return, the DLG agreed to compensate Ufa's loss of income. For their international business, DLG and Ufa founded a joint subsidiary, Auslandsfilm GmbH .

At the end of 1919, the DLG took over the right-wing national newsreel " Messter Week " from Ufa , which was continued under this title until 1922. Since 1920 a " Deulig-Woche " was also published, which in 1932 was renamed "Deulig-Tonwoche". When Alfred Hugenberg took over Ufa in 1927, the DLG was absorbed into it. The “Deulig Tonwoche”, which was now produced by Ufa, only ran until 1940.

The DLG not only produced films, but up to the 1940s also produced slides (photo tapes with still images on film strips) on religious, political and propaganda topics, such as the Spanish Civil War or the attack on Poland .
