The German Ski Championships for 1901 were held on February 1st as part of the three-day field mountain races. The victory in cross-country skiing on 25 kilometers went with Henry Hoek first time to a German skier, the champion in the first advertised ski jumping was won by the Norwegian Bjarne Nilssen .

Short Story

The championship race for Germany was as advertised in the previous year from the Black Forest ski club and came on the first day of February 3, lasting from 1 Feldberg race to host. As in the first edition, the championship was advertised internationally, which meant that foreign athletes were also allowed to take part and achieve the title of German champion . The second day was reserved for two further endurance runs , including the championship run of the Black Forest ski club, which Henry Hoek also won ahead of Emil Maier from Menzenschwand , while the third day was dedicated to popular, youth and women’s skiing. Traditionally, the hunter battalions stationed in Alsace took part in the competitions , and skiers from Sweden had also registered.

The winner received a plaque in the form of a golden ski .

Route: Belchen - Feldberg - Feldberger Hof.

As in the previous year, the starting point of the route was on the summit of the Belchen (1,414 m). Four of the five skiers registered for the championship run came to the start. The competition began with a longer descent from Belchen and led over a length of 25 kilometers over the summit of the Feldberg (1,493 m) to the finish at Feldberger Hof (1,300 m). The skiers had to cope with runs of 800 meters and inclines of 700 meters. The snow conditions were described as very good, but the steeper, snow-free slopes on the Feldberg with their large areas of icy areas caused some difficulties for skiers. Nevertheless, the winner Henry Hoek managed to undercut last year's fastest time. The race turned out to be very exciting. Only half a ski length behind the winner, Oberjäger Wich, the runner-up, crossed the finish line.

The championship for Germany in jumping was won by the Norwegian Bjarne Nilssen , who is studying in Darmstadt , with a width of 19.5 meters. Nilssen had already won the jump run last year (with 18.5 meters), but this was not yet part of the German championship. According to various statements, his compatriot Olsen or Anders Holte came in second . Third place went to Oscar Mayer , the son of the Feldbergerhof host from the Todtnau section of the SCS, a representative of the Black Forest. As the Freiburg newspaper noted, its leap was on a par with that of the Norwegians in terms of posture and elegance . The well-known Freiburg skier and later zoologist Karl Gruber took fifth place . In the student competition, the later famous German ski jumper Rudolf Biehler took third place.
