Short Story

The German Ski Championships developed from the already since 1896 the Ski Club Black Forest by guided snowshoe race at Feldberg. At its fifth general meeting on December 5, 1899, at the request of the Freiburg local group, the main board of the ski club decided to introduce an international race for the championship of Germany over a length of about 30 kilometers in 1900 . The Black Forest Ski Club invited athletes from the region as well as national and international skiers. The Feldberger Hof was busy with over 200 mostly participating guests, but the inns in the surrounding villages of Titisee , Menzenschwand , Todtnau , Bärenthal and Hinterzarten were also filled with numerous active athletes and winter sports enthusiasts. The club officials were particularly proud of the participating Norwegians, as an advertisement in the Freiburg newspaper shows:

" The races are gaining in interest because for the first time several Norwegians are taking part in them ".

The Norwegians actually sparked great enthusiasm in the local population through their high skiing skills and were one of the reasons for the extremely lively reporting in the regional press .

Bjarne Nilssen , who was studying in Darmstadt at the time, was the premier winner in the competition for the German championship over the distance between 23 and 25 kilometers according to various sources . The winner received a plaque in the form of a golden ski .

During the three days of racing, in addition to the championship run for Germany, other competitions were held, including the championship in the Black Forest Ski Club, which led from the Feldbergerhof to the Herzogenhorn and back and was won by Emil Maier ahead of Henry Hoek , as well as other cross-country runs over various distances , Youth competitions, women’s skiing and jumping for schoolchildren and senior citizens.
