Deutscher is a four-part German television film that was released on April 25, 2020 in the ZDFmediathek and broadcast on ZDFneo on April 28 and 29, 2020 . He describes the concrete, everyday consequences it could have for people if an extreme right-wing party suddenly ruled the country.
content
- Part 1 days like this
The Schneiders and the Pielckes have been neighbors in a single-family settlement for years. The sons of the families, both only children, go to the same school and are friends with each other. The adults don't have much to do with each other, but they always help each other.
When the victory of an extreme right-wing party and thus the handover of power to them was confirmed on election evening, the Schneiders were disturbed while the Pielcke couple celebrated.
Eva Schneider and her colleague Burak get into a car accident. Burak is first racially insulted by the opponents of the accident and then beaten to hospital. Cansu's father's burger joint is set on fire at night.
- Part 2 The clouds are moving
Marvin is threatened with a knife at Emrah's school because the latter suspects him to have something to do with the arson attack on Cansu's father's Turkish burger joint. Frank would like his own shop in the city center, which the right-wing conservative Günter Kellenburg welcomes, and he is also happy to help with the property search. But Ulrike has doubts about the financial feasibility. At the same time, Frank hopes that Olaf, Kellenburg's well-built son, and his friends will protect Marvin against Emrah.
The pharmacist Mrs. Becker separates from Burak. Eva wants to intervene because she has doubts about the correctness of the decision. Becker lets them down. Meanwhile, the teachers' conference is discussing separate lessons for “Muslim” and “German” students. A discussion breaks out between the teachers. Marvin is suspected at school of having contact with the person who is said to have lit the Oktay snack, but the latter remains silent. This drives a wedge between David and Cansu.
When Burak wants to sue Becker for discrimination after his release, she asks Eva to try to talk to Burak again on her behalf. Eva reproaches her and quits immediately.
Finally, when Marvin does not come home long after school has finished and nobody knows where he is, the mood at Schneiders and Pielckes boils high, as Schneiders are also convinced that Marvin could be connected to the arsonists. Marvin turns up at home, bloodied. Cansu's brother is arrested by the police.
- Part 3 What is tomorrow
Frank and Ulrike celebrate Frank's birthday. Schneiders also appear at the garden party. Eva, now seven months pregnant, believes she recognizes one of the men in one of Kellenburg's employees who beat up her and Burak.
Olaf, an apprentice at the Pielcke company, appears with a false medical certificate after Frank sharply criticized his condescending behavior towards a Turkish customer. Instead of going to work, he does weight training with Marvin, who covers him.
The media reported more often about the measures taken by the new government. Physical aggression escalates increasingly at school. While the majority of teachers now agree to separate classes between Muslim and non-Muslim students in order to promote a mindful togetherness, Christoph is still an opponent of this. The student body has generally no interest in protesting against it. Burak reports that xenophobic discrimination is increasing in everyday life.
Eva visits Ulrike and speaks to her about Kellenburg and his staff, whom she believes she recognized at the garden party, a "Nazi" as she calls him. Ulrike reacts irritably and asks Eva to go again. After Eva has informed Burak of her suspicion, the latter appears at Kellenburg and seeks a confrontation. Later Burak suddenly stands bleeding at Schneider's front door. Pielckes observe the incident and decide to inform the police. Burak is arrested.
- Part 4 All that and much more
Cansu has disappeared, David is worried because he still had an appointment with her. Christoph has to present himself to the directorate after openly expressing his political preferences to students. Christoph considers the new government to be "undemocratic". The director asks him for discretion. As a result, Christoph's political working group is withdrawn. Poethen, who is very close to the ideas of the new government and is most likely the complainant against him, will be the new head of the working group.
Kellenburg is seriously injured in hospital after the scuffle with Burak. Frank is fully behind Kellenburg, while Ulrike criticizes his aggressive attitude. Frank calls Burak "Kanaken". Pielckes get into an argument, Frank sounds like Olaf.
Frank picks up Kellenburg from the hospital, to whom he owes his professional success. Incidentally, Kellenburg overhears his son Olaf pretending to be sick so that he doesn't have to continue working. At home he beats and insults Olaf for fear that nothing will become of him.
Ulrike gave Schneiders the name and photo of the alleged violent perpetrator from the garden party. But Eva gets scruples and thinks further involvement in the matter is pointless, whereas Christoph now sees an opportunity to show moral courage. Pielckes get involved in the discussion. In any case, Ulrike is ready to accompany them to the police.
Meanwhile, Marvin drives with Frank and David to Kellenburg's forest hut to look for Cansu, where they meet Olaf. Marvin admits that he was beaten up and put under pressure by Olaf and his friends, and not by Cansu's brother. He now accuses Olaf of arson. David frees Cansu from prison. Olaf flees. During the pursuit, Marvin is hit by a car. In the evening Marvin wakes up from his unconsciousness, where both families gather around the sickbed.
