The German Photographers Association is considered to be the first association of professional photographers . It was founded in 1876.

history

At the constituent assembly on December 29, 1876 in Gotha, the “Thuringian Photographers Association” was founded. A month later, at its first hiking meeting in Jena on January 31, 1877, this name was changed to Deutscher Photographen-Verein . Karl Schwier , who had studied under Hermann Wilhelm Vogel at the Berlin Business Academy and ran a studio in Weimar , was one of the initiators. The seat of the association was Weimar.

The fact that the Photographische Verein zu Berlin had already decided in 1868 to call itself the Deutscher Photographen-Verein in order to identify photographers and also people involved in trade and / or development for the Photography in other cities opened. In the middle of 1869, however, this association split into a newly founded “ Association for the Promotion of Photography ” and henceforth again called the “Photographischer Verein zu Berlin”.

After the Franco-German War (1870-71) and the founding of the German Empire "spread throughout Germany a" consensus-making-strong "- enthusiasm out of a wave of patriotic , cultural and corporative pulled up clubs for themselves. Each of the innumerable associations hoped to be able to enforce all possible special interests through "unity". The idea of an independent, “all-German” photography association, which would take care of the special needs of professional photographers , was well received everywhere. ”The Photographisches Wochenblatt was the first organ of the association. After Schwier and the owner of the paper, Mr Benekendorf, fell out in 1877, the association's organ was the Deutsche Photographen-Zeitung , which Schwier published in Leipzig from 1876 to 1920 . In 1924 the newspaper stopped its publication. The edition was stated in the festival newspaper in 1895 as 3,300 copies.

From 1882 the "Deutscher Photographen-Kalender" was published by the Deutsche Photographen-Zeitung publishing house. It discontinued its publication in 1918.

Once a year, "hiking assemblies" took place, about which a report on the ... hiking assembly ... was published regularly . On the occasion of and during such gatherings there were also exhibitions to which the photographers could submit their work. Awards also took place at times.

An important aspect of the work of a photographer came up at the 22nd hiking meeting in Hildesheim, the continuation of gainful employment on Sundays . Photographic studios were much more frequented on Sundays than on other days. On the one hand, the potential customers wore their “ Sunday best ”, in which one could be adequately portrayed, and on the other hand they had a day off.

The German Photographers Association was one of the largest associations in the interests of photography in Europe. For the year 1895 the "Officielle Fest-Zeitung" published a number of 802 members.
