was founded on November 18, 1863 in Berlin . The association offered numerous photographers, studio operators and manufacturers of aids for photography opportunities to exchange experiences in meetings, exhibitions and publications in the association journal.

history

Purpose of the association

“The [first] chairman [Hermann W. Vogel] saw the purpose of the merger as safeguarding the interests of photography externally and internally, holding lectures and discussions ..., setting up a journal, a library and a collection of photographic samples organizing public exhibitions, founding a club magazine and organizing social gatherings. "

1868-1870

The association was well received by photographers, manufacturers of optical and chemical aids and other interested parties who were not based in Berlin. In order to better involve external members in the activities of the association, they should be able to set up local district associations. For this purpose, a draft statute was adopted in the general assembly of the "Photographisches Verein zu Berlin" on March 8, 1867, where it was stated in §1. was called:

"The previous Photographic Association of Berlin constitutes itself, expanding its tendencies in the entirety of its (local and foreign) members as the German Photographers Association"

Berlin was still the seat of the association. The name of the Berlin association was according to §3. "Berlin District Association of German Photographers". No importance was attached to an exact naming, because the meeting reports were published under the name “Deutscher Photographen-Verein, Berliner Bezirks-Verein” in the Photographische Mitteilungen .

  • On March 22nd, 1867, the "Hamburg District Association" was founded as the first foreigner. The founders were the photographers Adolph Kindermann , Wilhelm Breuning u. a. At the April 17th meeting, Mr. Garbe was elected to the Board of Directors and Mr. Schmidt as its deputy.
  • In September 1867 another district association, the “Chemnitz District Association”, was founded.
  • In March 1868 the "New York District Association" was founded and chaired by Dr. Ernst Kutscher.

Two years after the founding of the district clubs, differences of opinion arose. In a meeting of the “Photographisches Verein Berliner Bezirk” (German Photographers Association, Berlin District Association) on May 7, 1869, 49 members declared their resignation. Numerous members joined them. In a constituent meeting on May 11, 1869, they founded the " Association for the Promotion of Photography ", and Dr. Hermann Vogel, 2nd chairman Mr. Theodor Prümm . The New York District Association joined the newly founded Association for the Promotion of Photography at the end of June.

On May 13, 1869, Franz Stolze was appointed head of the association as his successor. In 1873 Stolze handed over the chairmanship to Ernst Düby, who held it until February 1881. Düby was appointed as chairman and Dr. Julius Stinde was elected as 1st Vice Chairman and Mr. Carl Suck as 2nd Vice Chairman. Franz Stolze then took over the management again, which he gave up again 10 years later in 1891.

Club journals

As of April 1864, the Photographische Mitteilungen appeared as a journal , "edited and edited personally by the first chairman, Hermann Vogel". Since Hermann Vogel, as the editor of the Photographische Mitteilungen, was one of the proponents of a new association in 1869, they discontinued their services as the journal of the German Photographers Association and its district associations. The Photographische Mitteilungen reported for the new "Association for the Promotion of Photography" from 1869.
As of 1877, Ernst Düby was the editor in charge of the weekly Photographisches Wochenblatt for the association and published it at FU Beneckendorff. Düby led the editorial team until the end of January 1881 and handed it over to Franz Stolze. It served as an association organ until 1888. In September 1889, Adolf Miethe took over the editorial office.
