history

Initially, the establishment of the German Castle Museum in Cadolzburg in Bavaria was planned. At the end of 2001, an architectural office commissioned by the Bavarian Palace Administration and the Nuremberg State Building Authority began working on construction plans after a rough plan had been drawn up. The plans came to nothing; the choice fell on the fortress Heldburg.

In 2005 a sponsoring association for the museum was founded. It includes the Germanic National Museum , the Thuringian Palaces and Gardens Foundation and the German Historical Museum , as well as the Hildburghausen district , the city of Heldburg , the South Thuringian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and other associations and companies.

Initially, the opening of the museum was planned for 2011. The renovation work was delayed; the construction work for the renovation of the fortress began on June 2, 2009. The construction costs were estimated at four to seven million euros in 2009. The grand opening ceremony of the German Castle Museum took place on September 8, 2016. The museum has been open to regular visitors since September 9, 2016.

exhibition

In 2007, an exhibition with 30 display boards was opened in the Veste Heldburg, providing information about the goals and contents of the future museum until the opening. It also offers an overview of the typology and history of the castles, their function during the Middle Ages, their functions as official residence in the 18th and 19th centuries, and their role in the 19th century. Castle research is explained; in addition, the work of the international Wartburg Society is presented.

At the opening, the publication Burgen in Deutschland, Österreich and Schweiz by Anja Grebe and G. Ulrich Großmann appeared in the writings of the German Castle Museum .
