The aim of the mother recovery organization is to strengthen mothers in their health. Under the umbrella of the foundation, women-specific and holistic preventive and rehabilitation measures are offered for mothers and mothers with children, which include medical and psychosocial therapies as well as health promotion. Since 2013, the “Care Work” endowment has also been offering measures for fathers and caring relatives

The following five support groups have come together in the maternal recovery organization to jointly promote the health of mothers:

They are responsible for the 5 mothers' and 71 mother-child facilities for mother and mother-child cures recognized by the Müttergenesungswerk, as well as around 1,300 counseling and placement centers. In 2015, around 49,000 women with 72,000 children were able to take part in a measure organized by the mother recovery organization.

Indications for a preventive or rehabilitation measure by the MGW

Many mothers are affected by an exhaustion syndrome, which is to be seen in connection with family work and gender-specific multiple burdens, demands as well as inflated and often contradicting expectations. Women often react to this permanent excessive demand with coping strategies that are harmful to their health and the development of physical, psychological and psychosomatic symptoms - especially if there are other problems in overload situations , such as B. partnership conflicts, financial worries, unemployment, illness or disability of a family member occur.

These states of exhaustion are associated with a variety of psychosomatic disorders, somatoform complaints and functional diseases. The symptoms range from physical complaints such as headaches, sleep disorders or sweating to diffuse impairments such as constant tiredness or dejection, listlessness, mood swings or feelings of fear. Often there are also functional diseases such as spinal column or intervertebral disc problems or cardiovascular problems.

Indications for mothers who take part in preventive or rehabilitation measures in facilities of the German Mothers' Recovery Association include:

  • Endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases
  • Mental and behavioral disorders
  • Nervous system diseases
  • Circulatory system diseases
  • Respiratory system diseases
  • Digestive system diseases
  • Diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissue
  • Diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue
  • Diseases of the genitourinary system
  • Congenital malformations, deformities and chromosomal abnormalities

Indications for children for preventive care or rehabilitation in the mother-child measure include:

  • Respiratory system diseases
  • Diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissue
  • Mental and behavioral disorders
  • Congenital malformations, deformities and chromosomal abnormalities

In addition, there are offers in several institutions that take into account the special life situations of women, e. B. Offers for mothers with disabled children, for mothers with relatives in need of care, for mothers with relatives who are addicted, for single mothers or for coping with grief.

Treatment concept

The measures of the mother recovery organization are based on a holistic and women-specific approach. The focus here is less on individual symptoms and ailments than on the symptom constellations and their complex causes. Physical, psychological and social aspects of illnesses and complaints are treated in an integrated manner, the entire life situation of women is the starting point for all medical and therapeutic measures. The therapies are intended to enable women to recognize connections between their stressful living conditions and their illnesses. The aim is to support them in developing positive health awareness and adequate coping mechanisms.

In order to achieve this goal, interdisciplinary teams work closely together in the facilities of the maternal convalescence facility: Doctors, psychologists, physiotherapists, social pedagogues and dieticians support the women in coping with their illnesses and life situations.

Medical prevention and rehabilitation are aimed both at mothers alone and at mothers with their children. In mothers' measures, women have the chance to concentrate on themselves and their needs far away from the “family work place”, to be responsible only for themselves. In mother-child measures, children's illnesses are also treated preventively or rehabilitatively, which is becoming increasingly important in view of the increasing illnesses among children. However, there are also reasons for mother-child measures if a separation of mother and child is unreasonable or there is no other accommodation option for the child. The children are given medical care and educational support as required. The additional mother-child interaction offers are very important for the healthy development of the child and the well-being of the mother. At the same time, they open up the opportunity to experience the mother-child relationship anew.

Quality assurance and quality development

All inpatient facilities recognized by the maternal convalescence organization are obliged to carry out quality-controlled preventive and rehabilitation measures on the basis of the content-related requirements of the MGW.

The facilities work according to a defined concept for quality assurance and development, which is continuously adapted to the changing framework conditions. This ensures that the preventive and rehabilitation measures correspond to the current state of scientific knowledge. The aim of this concept is to define the framework conditions, specify structures, accompany the treatment processes and make the results verifiable.

Therapy effects

The health success of the maternal convalescence work has been scientifically proven. The research association Prevention and Rehabilitation for Mothers and Children at the Hannover Medical School carried out studies and published publications.

The results show that the pronounced input loads are significantly reduced and transfer to everyday life has been successful, e.g. B. Reduction of exhaustion, strengthening of parenting skills, overall a significant improvement in health. In addition, after the end of the measure, less medication is taken, there are fewer sick days and visits to the doctor and fewer outpatient measures are used. The general health of the children also improved significantly at the end of the measures. Long-term studies half a year or one year after the measure show that these results can still be demonstrated in the medium and long term in mothers and children.

Advice centers

Around 1300 advice centers of the welfare associations are available nationwide as contact points for questions about a mother or mother-child measure. The Catholic Working Group for Mothers' Recovery (KAG / Caritas) offers the greatest concentration of advice centers (approx. 400). The advice ranges from practical questions (care for the children, applications, financing) to clarifying expectations and goals. After the measure, the counselors support the women in integrating new findings and behavior patterns into everyday life and thus making them applicable in the long term. In particular, the workers' welfare organization has succeeded in providing the mothers with support in everyday life on a voluntary basis after the inpatient measure with a standardized aftercare program already prepared during the cure.

One of the essential foundations for sustainable success is good preparation for the measure and the accompanying follow-up work at the place of residence. This so-called “therapeutic chain” is unique and characteristic of the mother's convalescence work.

Legal basis / eligibility requirements

Since April 1, 2007, inpatient mother / mother-child measures in preventive care and rehabilitation have become a mandatory benefit of the statutory health insurance . In principle, all women (and, according to Section 40, Paragraph 1, Sentence 2, SGB V, also fathers) who are responsible for their families are entitled to medical preventive or rehabilitation measures according to Sections 24 and 41 SGB V, if this is medically indicated and the doctor is responsible for the Attested the need for this measure.

Outpatient measures do not have priority over inpatient mother or mother-child measures, i. H. Health insurance companies must approve medically necessary treatments. The measures are divided into the two areas of prevention and rehabilitation. The following medical requirements must be met for both areas:

prevention
Medical care services are indicated if there are influenceable risk factors or health disorders that are likely to lead to an illness in the foreseeable future and / or the health development of a child is at risk (primary prevention). There is also a need for precautionary measures if, in the case of manifest (chronic) illness, threatening impairments are to be prevented or the occurrence of relapses or exacerbations (i.e. relapses and exacerbations) is to be avoided or the severity or progression of the disease is to be counteracted (secondary prevention) and a more complex one multidimensional and interdisciplinary treatment approach is required.
rehabilitation
Medical rehabilitation benefits are indicated if, due to physical, mental or emotional damage, there are likely to be more than temporary everyday impairments to activities that threaten participation in the foreseeable future or if these already exist and a complex, multidimensional and interdisciplinary treatment approach is also required.

The environmental and personal context factors must be taken into account in the assessment.

The duration of the stay is usually three weeks, in medically necessary cases it can also be extended. The repetition period between two measures is four years. Medically justified exceptions are also possible here.

A right to inpatient medical care and rehabilitation for mothers also existed under the Federal Social Welfare Act (Section 37 BSHG).
