German Whip Museum
The German Whip Museum in Killer , a suburb of the city of Burladingen in the Zollernalb district in Baden-Württemberg , shows the history and manufacture of so-called driving whips or stick whips.
History of whip production in Killer
Due to the narrowness of the valley basin, no productive agriculture was possible in Killer. Inevitably, the residents of the Killertal had to look for another opportunity to earn a living . Killer concentrated on the manufacture of whips for ox and horse-drawn vehicles as well as cabs and carriages . The whip making trade was previously a three-year apprenticeship. In the high phase of whip production at the beginning of the 20th century, 5000 pieces were made in Killer every day and shipped all over the world. At that time about every second whip in Germany came from Killer. The whip production and its sales markets perished after the Second World War . In the 1970s, the last whip factory in Killer closed.
The museum
In 1993 the museum was set up by Jürgen Simmendinger, chairman of the local homeland association, in the station building of Killer on the HzL route Hechingen – Gammertingen , which was no longer used for operations . A fully functional workshop with all machines and equipment for whip production as well as numerous whips of all kinds will be presented. In addition to the permanent exhibition of whips from all over the world , temporary and special exhibitions are also shown and events are held. It has a shop and catering.
In 1996 the editorial team of the Guinness Book of Records confirmed that the whip museum is the only one of its kind in Germany.
After the unexpected death of the museum's founder in 2007, his son Oliver took over the management of the museum and the chairmanship of the Heimatverein. In November 2012, the museum was named a “Exemplary Local Museum” in the Tübingen administrative region .
