The DG 1000 BBM is a diesel locomotive type made by the manufacturer Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz (KHD). Initially with a 1000 hp engine, it was the most powerful single-engine type in the so-called model range in 1959 . With the development of a more powerful engine, a model with 1200 hp under the designation DG 1200 BBM was also delivered from 1960 . In the vehicle settings register of the EBA , the DG 1000 BBM was assigned the series number 98 80 3422.

technology

At the beginning of the 1960s, KHD was the only provider of diesel locomotives for private railways with an output of 1000 and more hp alongside the Kiel company MaK . While the MaK rod locomotives used a drive by means of coupling rods , KHD relied on bogie locomotives with cardan shafts .

A standing twelve-cylinder V-two-stroke engine of the type T12M625 with a piston stroke of 25 cm was used as the drive unit. The initially installed, teardrop-shaped lamps gave the locomotives a characteristic appearance, but they were later removed from almost all locomotives in favor of a much more inconspicuous design.

commitment

A total of 21 locomotives of this type were built and sold to various private and industrial railways. Most railways only bought one or two locomotives, the Bavarian Brown Coal Industry (BBI, 3 locomotives) and the Mannesmann Hüttenwerke in Duisburg (4 locomotives) received more than two copies . In the meantime, three locomotives were or are each in use by the Osthannoversche Eisenbahnen , the AKN Eisenbahn and the RWE Power .

Four locomotives have now been scrapped, one only serves as a spare parts donor and the whereabouts of a sixth machine is unknown. Six more machines are now in use in Italy. The only locomotive that was delivered with explosion protection (serial number 57679 from 1964) was also sold to Italy in 2009. The WLE locomotive 36 is now also a one-off; it was equipped with a 1200 kW motor in the WLE workshop and given new superstructures.
