history

After the expansion of the Erft Canal to the port (1837–1839), the upswing in the industrial city of Neuss and increasing handling numbers made an improved connection to the Prussian railway network (1853) necessary. After they rebuilt their route network and terminated the operation of the port railway, the city founded its own ring and port railway in 1905 and built a route network with a connection to the relocated freight station of the Prussian Railway. The handling of coal, ore and wood increased steadily.

Both world wars abruptly ended the boom and destroyed parts of the facilities. They were then rebuilt.

In the second half of the twentieth century, transport sales fell as the transport of food and grain by truck was faster and, above all, cheaper. The transport volume of ores, steel and coal also decreased overall.

At the turn of the millennium, the main task of the Neuss Railway was so-called combined cargo traffic (KLV), i.e. the handling of standardized containers and swap bodies between barges, trucks and railways. After the Deutsche Bundesbahn network opened up , the Neuss Railway found new fields of activity in local freight transport.

At the beginning of 2003, the ports of Neuss on the left bank of the Rhine and Düsseldorf ports on the right bank merged. The Neusser Eisenbahn now operates both track networks, which are connected to one another via a Rhine bridge on the DB route network.

To mark the centenary of the Neuss Railway in October 2004, numerous historic steam and diesel locomotives could be viewed on the tracks of the Neuss Railway. Visitors had the opportunity to explore the port from the perspective of the port railway with a RegioBahn railcar .
