Devdas Gandhi ( Hindi : देवदास गांधी , Devadās Gāndhī ; born May 22, 1900 in Durban , South Africa , † August 3, 1957 in Bombay ) was an Indian journalist and editor. He was the fourth and youngest son of Mohandas Gandhi (called Mahatma Gandhi) and also campaigned for the independence of India.

Life

He returned with his family as a young man from South Africa to India, the country of his parents' birth. Like two of his brothers, Devdas became a member of his father's independence movement, which is why he was imprisoned several times by the British colonial government. Devdas Gandhi was also a well-known journalist and was the editor of the Hindustan Times .

marriage

At the age of 28, Devdas Gandhi fell in love with Lakshmi, who was then only fifteen, the daughter of C. Rajagopalachari . Due to the large age difference between the two, their fathers asked the couple to wait five years before the wedding, during which they should not see each other. After the five years had passed, the couple married in 1933 with the permission of both fathers. They had four children, Rajmohan Gandhi , Gopalkrishna Gandhi , Ramchandra Gandhi and Tara Bhattacharya.
