Ramchandra Gandhi

Ramchandra Gandhi (born June 9, 1937 , † June 13, 2007 in New Delhi ) was an Indian philosopher and author . He was a grandson of Mahatma Gandhi .

life and work

Professional background

Ramchandra Gandhi studied philosophy at the Universities of Delhi and Oxford . After his doctorate he taught in Great Britain, at Princeton University , USA and in India in Hyderabad and Shantiniketan ; In 1999 he was visiting professor of philosophy at Panjab University ("Aurobindo Golden Jubilee Chair").

In India he was known as a philosopher and author of several books, including those about his famous grandfather. He has also written plays, including Ramakrishna Paramhansa , Swami Vivekananda , Francis of Assisi and Ramana Mahanti . In Germany his theological treatises are known, among other things, on Christ and Gandhi. He was a longtime member of the International Humanitarian Center of India.

Private

He married Indu and had a daughter named Leela with her .

He died on June 13, 2007 in the IIC cultural center in the capital Delhi.

family

Ramchandra Gandhi was the second son of four children of the Indian journalist and editor of The Hindustan Times , Devdas Gandhi , the fourth son of Mahatma Gandhi , and of Laxmiben Gandhi, the daughter of C. Rajagopalachari .

His eldest brother is the historian Rajmohan . His younger brother, Gopalkrishna , was governor of West Bengal from 2004 to 2009 and is married to Tara. He also had a sister named Tara and a niece named Amrita.
