Dexter Manley Bussey (* 11. March 1952 in Dallas , Texas ) is a former American American football poker players. He played eleven seasons as running back for the Detroit Lions of the National Football League (NFL).

NFL

Bussey was selected by the Detroit Lions in the third round of the 1974 NFL Draft . He immediately became the Lions' starting halfback , a position he held until 1980. After the Lions drafted Billy Sims , he switched to the fullback position . In the first two years he took the starting role in this position, before the Lions drafted James Jones in 1983 and Bussey was a substitute player. Bussey was annoyed after he only needed two yards to break the franchise record of Sims in the last game of the 1984 season , but the head coach of the Lions, Monte Clark , only announced passing moves and Bussey did not break the record. After the season he resigned from active professional sport because he was in too much pain due to a knee injury which he suffered in his rookie season. In his career for the Lions, he also caught 193 passes for 1,616 yards of space. It ranks third on the list of most run yards for the Lions.
