Dezső Legány

Dezső Legány (born January 19, 1916 in Szombathely ; † May 28, 2006 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian composer , pianist and musicologist .

Life

His father taught at the Protestant grammar school in Oberschützen (then the Hungarian name Felsőlövő ). Legány spent his childhood in what is now Burgenland . After the First World War the family moved to Hungary . He studied law at the University of Pécs , composition with János Viski at the Franz Liszt Music Academy and musicology at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences . He received his PhD in musicology in 1981.

From 1951 to 1958 he was an assistant professor at the Franz Liszt Music Academy. He supported the Hungarian uprising in 1956 , which is why the government transferred him from the music college to the conservatory as a teacher . From 1958 to 1973 he taught at the Béla Bartók Conservatory in Budapest. From 1973 to 1983 he headed the music department at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

He was a board member of the American Liszt Society and an honorary member of the International Liszt Center in Stockholm. Dezső Legány wrote a. a. Books about Henry Purcell , Franz Liszt , Ferenc Erkel and Zoltán Kodály . He also wrote the Chronicle of Hungarian Music History (1962).
