Dhërmi ( Albanian  also  Dhërmiu ; Greek Δρυμάδες Drymádes ) is a village in southern Albania in the Bashkia Himara . The older district is located on the northern Albanian Riviera high above the coast of the Ionian Sea , while a tourist village has developed along the beach.

population

Like the neighboring village of Palasa , Dhërmi is a place with a Greek population , who even make up the majority here. They speak a local Greek dialect and are also proficient in Albanian . Most of the population is Orthodox .

history

The first settlers in the area of Himara were the Chaonians in ancient times , who lived in 214 BC. Were attacked and conquered by the Macedonians under Philip V of Macedonia . After the fall of the Roman Empire , varied years followed: under the Bulgarians , under the Balšić / Balsha, for a short time under the Arabs (Al-Evra) and later under the Normans . The area - then much more densely populated than today - enjoyed a certain independence from the Ottoman central power. In 1797 Tepedelenli Ali Pascha bound the area under his rule. In 1912 Dhërmi became part of the new Albanian state. But in March 1914 the region declared itself autonomous. In the 1960s, individual tourist facilities were built for the country's communist elite. After 1990 , the majority of the population emigrated to Greece .

Tourism and sightseeing

In recent years, Dhërmi's tourist infrastructure has been steadily expanded, and the number of holidaymakers, especially from other parts of the country, but also from neighboring countries, is constantly increasing. These are primarily beach tourists who appreciate the clear sea. In addition, all connecting roads from Dhërmi to Vlora and Saranda have been renewed and expanded.

In Dhërmi there are said to be 31 churches and monasteries, some of which are decorated with elaborate frescoes. Some can still be visited today, although some of them are in a poor structural condition. Among the most famous is the Church of St. Mary (Alb. Shën Mëri ) from the 13th and 14th centuries, the Church of Hypapante ( Ipapandia ) from the 18th century and Shën Stefani with components from different epochs.
