The Albanian Riviera ( Albanian  Riviera shqiptare ) describes a steep stretch of coast in the southwest of Albania . The Riviera lies on the Ionian Sea north of Saranda and ends at the Llogara Pass ( 1027  m above sea level ) south of Vlora , where the Adriatic Sea begins. The Albanians often simply refer to the Riviera as Bregu , "the coast". The Ceraunic Mountains separate the Riviera from the hinterland.

geography

Topographic map of the Albanian Riviera

The capital of the Riviera and seat of the Bashkia is Himara . Until 2015, the municipality of Himara comprised only the northern part of the Riviera ( Vlora district ) with nine villages: Palasa is the northernmost, located at the foot of the Llogara pass. This is followed southwards by Kondraq , Gjileka and Drimadha , Dhërmi , Ilias and Vuno . Pilur and Kudhës are in the mountains east of Himara. To the south of the coast comes Qeparo-Fusha and the Qeparo located above on the mountain . The southern part used to form the Komuna of Lukova ( Saranda district ); these included the villages of Fterra and Çorraj in the mountains and Borsh on the coast , the district of Qazim Pali , Piqeras , Sasaj , Lukova, Shën Vasil - which was called Përparim during the communist dictatorship - and Nivica , which was already behind the Shën pass Vasil is lying. In 2011, the two communities together had 7,818 inhabitants.

The area is very remote and can only be reached on narrow, winding roads. After the collapse of communism in 1990/91, the Albanian Riviera was heavily depopulated. The young residents in particular were looking for work in Greece , as has been documented in the example of Fterra . In some villages only old people live now.

tourism

Around the year 2000, the region gradually began to develop touristically . Hotels, holiday apartments and restaurants were created. The SH8 coastal road has been newly developed since autumn 2008. The access road over the Llogara Pass has also been newly developed. By 2011, all the access roads to the beaches of Dhërmi were expanded up to the height of Lukova.

Most of the tourists are Albanians from Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia as well as emigrants on home leave. Outside the main town of Himara and the village of Dhërmi, however, the landscape is still largely free of hotels and restaurants. The French travel company Club Méditerranée planned to build a hotel complex with Shën Vasil as the first western investor. The construction work made little progress for years until 2009 because the local population protested over disputes over property. Club Méditerranée then withdrew from Albania in the meantime.

In addition to the impressive coastal landscape and the beaches, which is why most tourists arrive, the Albanian Riviera also offers historical sights, including the castle of Porto Palermo , the castle of Sopot , some churches, Old Himara and other pretty villages.
