Diana Wynyard (born January 16, 1906 in London , England ; † May 13, 1964 there ; born Dorothy Isobel Cox ) was a British actress .

Life

She began her acting career in 1925 at the Globe Theater in London's West End and joined the Liverpool Playhouse Co. for two years in 1927. She had her breakthrough in 1932 at the side of Basil Rathbone on Broadway in The Devil Passes . She got a contract with MGM , which she used alongside the three Barrymore siblings in the not necessarily historically correct film Rasputin: The Demon of Russia . In the following years she played mostly well-bred ladies of better society. She received a nomination for Best Actress at the 1934 Academy Awards for her appearance in Kavalkade , the film adaptation of Noël Coward 's play of the same name .

The following films did not bring her the breakthrough she had hoped for and Wynyard returned to London. She did not appear in motion pictures for five years. It was only at the beginning of the Second World War that she worked alongside Adolf Wohlbrück in Gaslicht .

After that, she focused again on the stage and celebrated triumphs in the London production of Lillian Hellman's anti-Nazi drama Watch on the Rhine . She also played Lady Macbeth , was Gertrud in Hamlet and appeared on stage as Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing . In 1947 she had her last good film role in the adaptation of Oscar Wilde's An Ideal Husband as Lady Chiltren. In the last years of her life Diana Wynyard, who had been married to the director Carol Reed from 1943 to 1947 , also appeared again in several modern plays, for example in 1957 in Tennessee Williams Camino Real or in 1964 in Max Frisch's Andorra .
