Dianthus xylorrhizus is a species from the genus of carnations ( Dianthus ) in the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae).

features

Dianthus xylorrhizus is a perennial subshrub that reaches heights of 5 to 15 centimeters. The stem is bare. The basal sheets are linear-elongated, more than 4 millimeters wide, flat and more or less soft. The flowers are arranged individually or in twos, less often in threes. The usually four, rarely five or six outer sepals are brown, leathery, pointed or pointed and about a quarter as long as the calyx. The calyx measures 20 to 25 × 4 to 5 millimeters and is widest below the center. The petal plate is 4 to 6 millimeters long, bare, dirty white and toothed or almost entire.

The flowering period extends from May to June.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 30.

Occurrence

Dianthus xylorrhizus is endemic to Crete in the prefecture of Chania . The species grows there in limestone crevices at altitudes of 300 to 700 meters.
